Water Rate Increase The Detroit wholesale water rate proposed to take effect July 1, 2005 for the City of Wixom will change our current rate of $13.55 per thousand cubic foot to $15.75, a difference of $2.22 cents or 16%. It is important to note here that Wixom’s sewer rate is $9.00 per thousand cubic foot while the average sewer rate for suburban communities is $23.70 – as reported by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department in January of 2004. This equates to a approximately $294 difference annually between the average sewer rate of $23.70 and the City of Wixom sewer rate of $9.00 for most families that use approximately 20,000 cubic feet of water/sewer per year. It is important, when looking at your bills, that you look at both the water and sewer charges.
To summarize, currently the average family of four in Wixom using 20,000 cubic feet of water/sewer per year, can expect a quarterly bill of approximately $183, whereas the same family in another “average” suburban city can expect a quarterly bill of approximately $229 at 2004 Rates. It is our goal to provide Wixom residents with the highest quality of water and sewer service attainable at the least cost possible.
Protecting your water system in cold weather When the outside temperatures hover around zero degrees, there is a possibility of water pipes in your home freezing, especially if they are contained in a crawl space or pass up through an outside wall of your home. For the next few days, consider the following precautions: 1. Open a water tap slightly, so that a very small, but steady, flow is maintained through the pipes, and 2. Open the doors underneath your bathroom vanity or kitchen sink so that warm room air will heat the pipes as well. As an additional safety measure, ensure that you know the location of the water shut off valve for your home, usually situated near the water meter. A professional plumber or contractor can install heat tape around your exposed pipes to minimize the possibility of freezing as well. If your pipes do freeze, the situation should be dealt with swiftly in order to prevent water damage to your home. Call Earth Tech at 248-624-6421 if you need advice. |
